History of Hollywood

Nestled between the Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood was founded in 1925 by Joseph Wesley Young, a native of Washington State. In 1920, Joseph W. Young bought several thousands of acres of land and named it ‘Hollywood by the Sea’. He dreamed of making Hollywood a city for everyone and had a vision of having a luxury beach hotel, lakes, country clubs, golf courses and the Hollywood Boulevard, a main street. There was a rapid expansion the city with the construction of the Hollywood Boulevard Bridge. By 1926 January, the population of the city reached to 18,000 and there were about 252 business buildings, 36 apartment buildings, 9 hotels and 2,420 dwellings were established.  The city grew phenomenally. But in 1926, the hurricane in Miami damaged Hollywood majorly and after the death of the founder-Joseph W. Young in 1934, Hollywood witnessed more hurricanes. The city then grew again with the construction of several housing structures and population reached over 121,000 by 1975.
